What Your Help Means to Us

The Autism Society of Pittsburgh, addressing autism in the Greater Pittsburgh area, has developed a comprehensive array of services to help children and adults with autism, their families, and those who work with them. There are more than 4,000 families with autistic children in Southwestern Pennsylvania alone. The Autism Society of Pittsburgh acts as a support system for parents, relatives, professionals, and all others who have a commitment to autistic children, including:

  • Information and reference files by mail
  • Legal, medical, nutritional, educational and psychological references available for parents and professionals in local office library
  • Maintain reference files and literature on autism spectrum disorders
  • Referrals to appropriate professionals and programs
  • Information on alternative, as well as traditional therapies
  • Specific information on medications, as well as “legal drug abuse”
  • Quarterly newsletter on local and state autism issues
  • Periodic workshops by leading professionals in autism
  • “Summer Recreation and Education for Autistic Kids” program (S.P.E.A.K.), which has run every year since 1974
  • Support for existing and expanded initiatives of the state’s Bureau of Autism Services
  • Encourage the creation and improvement of appropriate local services for those with autism
  • Parent-to-parent counseling by phone, mail and in office
  • Up-to-date information on parent and student rights to educational and vocational training, care, treatment, transitional and habilitation programs

Funds raised by caring individuals and businesses support these programs and services that would otherwise not exist. This neglected segment of our population cannot speak for themselves, and their families are often overwhelmed by the enormous task involved in raising them. They need help and guidance every step of the way – from childhood through adulthood.

That is why fundraising efforts, large and small, are our lifeblood – vital to our existence and our effectiveness – giving us the wherewithal to strive to be better. This is the only real way we have of thanking those who provide the means for us to help autistic children, their families and the caring professionals who work with them.

Thank you so much.
