The Research Initiative

The Foundation for Autistic Research Inc. (F.A.R.), was founded by the Autism Society of Pittsburgh with the cooperation of local and national consumers and professionals in the field, and is headquartered in Pittsburgh, as well. F.A.R. was created to bring together those affected by autism in order to solve the mystery of this tragic and most perplexing neurological disorder.

F.A.R.'s national review committee has targeted research in nine areas considered by autism involved families and professionals to be most critical in the search for solutions to the puzzles of autism.

In addition, F.A.R. is conducting survey to determine the effectiveness of interventions intended to improve the ability of autistic individuals to communicate. Currently being studied are facilitated communication, and auditory training. Workshops in both of these have been sponsored in the past year by the Autism Society of Pittsburgh, with the actual techniques utilized with autistic children by expert practitioners.

Enormous savings in money and salvaged lives are the returns on successful research addressing the autism disorder.

There is, however, and even more urgent motive that is the major galvanizing force of our research initiative. It is simply this:

Autism is an equal-opportunity destroyer, cutting across all ethnic, racial, cultural and economic lines. Autism cannot be detected, in utero, or at birth. There are an estimated sixty-two suspected causes. Only a properly directed program of autism research can enable us, one day, to answer the sobering question: Is a member of my family likely to be born with autism?

  Sidney Kaplan, M.D., Chairman
F.A.R. Professional Review Committee

(Note: Dr. Kaplan passed away February 26, 1998.
Current Chairman is Dr. Ralph F. Wilps, Jr.)
