Spectrum Charter School
The Autism
Society of Pittsburgh combined with the Autism Society of
Westmoreland County to establish the "Spectrum Charter School." The
school is located in Monroeville. Its first students started classes
in September of last year. Our mission is to provide school-to-work
transition instruction in the classroom, on-site business, and
community-based work sites for students with autism spectrum
disorders ages 14-21. It is the first such school in the country.
Twenty students comprised the first class, three of whom were
graduated, and now have jobs in the community. In 2002, on June 5,
four more were graduated in to community-based employment.
What makes this
school special?
- There is a higher
teacher to student ratio.
- Pupils are taught
to conduct themselves in a professional manner.
- The environment
mirrors a workplace setting.
- Students get paid,
according to law. Job coaches work with students on the job during
the reaming process to assure employer satisfaction.
- Spectrum is a
public school in the second year of a five-year charter.

"Students with autism
spectrum disorders represent what may be the
nation's largest untapped employment resource. Their skills
are waiting
to be refined and utilized for the benefit of employers everywhere!"
